Maida Varistors Distributors Passive Parts and Components IBS Electronics Global Electronics Components Distributor For over 52 years the Maida Development Company has been a leading manufacturer and supplier of high quality components for the electronic industry. Maida currently has three full product lines, consisting of zinc-oxide varistors, ceramic disk capacitors, and PTC and NTC thermistors. From its founding in 1947 by Francis X. Maida, the corporate offices and manufacturing facilities for Maida are located in Hampton, Virginia, where today it encompasses over 100,000 square feet of space.

Component products manufactured by Maida cover a wide range of uses and industries. Maida's zinc-oxide varistors are used in many applications that require protection against transients induced by lightning struck power lines. They also provide protection for suppression of transients caused by switching inductive loads from transformers, relays and coils. Common applications include ground fault interrupters, specialty high-voltage power supplies, telecommunication equipment, computer and computer-related products, motor control systems, cable TV systems, and AC smoke detectors, plus many special applications.

Maida products are component-recognized in the United States as well as internationally by organizations such as UL, CSA, VDE, SEMKO, NEMKO, DEMKO, FIMKO, and SEV.

Maida products have a long heritage of proven high quality performance and reliability. They even worked their way to the moon and back during the Apollo Space Program. The Maida success story in part has resulted from a continuous dynamic program of research and development for improving both products and manufacturing processes to meet customer needs. Dedicated employees, management with a customer service attitude, sound competitive marketing, and state-of-the art products sum up the Maida story.

Varistors Components:
Maida manufactures three different series of zinc-oxide varistors with lead configurations using wire and tabs, and two different surface mount topologies.
  • Standard

The Standard Series is our broadest and most comprehensive line of radial-leaded varistors. Consisting of wire leads with nominal disk diameters from 3mm to 25mm, they are available with maximum continuous operating voltages (MCOV) ranging from 11VAC to 1000VAC.

The Standard Series is designed to handle most low and medium power applications requiring through-hole components.

  • MLV

Those familiar with Maida Development Company's disc varistors have some idea what a varistor is, but may be unfamiliar with multi-layer varistors (MLVs). MLVs are tiny ceramic chips terminated on each end. They can be used to protect circuits from electrostatic discharge and other high voltage surges. As with disc varistors, the purpose of an MLV is to protect an electronic circuit by carrying away unwanted high voltage spikes.

All varistors, including MLVs, have two operating conditions. Under normal operation there is virtually no current draw. The varistor sits idle and uses little power. However, if a large voltage spike comes into the circuit the varistor quickly begins to conduct electricity. The varistor will carry current away from the protected circuit to ground. As soon as the large spike passes, the varistor stops conducting and resumes its idle state. Some people think of this as a resettable fuse. The varistor resets itself after each voltage spike

  • High Energy

The High Energy Series large tab-leaded varistors, are designed to handle high peak currents and have the ability to absorb large amounts of energy. Available in round and square shapes to allow mounting in various spaces and in dual configurations that allow the user to apply these parts in series or parallel circuit topologies.

    Available in 32mm, 40mm, and 53mm single-disk configurations; 25mm and 34mm single-square configurations; 40mm dual-disk configuration; and 25mm and 34mm dual-square configurations. Voltages range from 130VAC to 1000VAC.

  • Low Profile

The Low Profile series complements our Standard Series of varistors. They're configured as square wire-leaded components designed to fit into a spaces where equivalent Standard Series varistors are unable to fit. A big advantage of the Low Profile Series is low seating height and smaller width when mounted on the PC board.

Voltages series range from 130VAC to 1000VAC. Four sizes are available; 12mm, 17mm, 22mm, and 25mm.

  • SMT

The SMT Series designed for Surface Mount applications, has lower profiles than our radial-leaded varistors.

Available in voltages from 10 to 275 VAC. Dimensions are 0.320 in. x 0.200 in. with a 0.080 in. maximum thickness.

  • Diamond

The Diamond Series can handle higher peak currents than varistors of the same size. By using the Diamond Series varistors, a varistor can achieve a lower seating height and increased space on the PC board, while being able to absorb higher energies.

    Offered in 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, 18, and 20mm nominal diameters. Available voltages are 130VAC, 140VAC and 150VAC.

Thermistors Components:
We specialize in Power Thermistors for in-rush current applications, Temperature Compensators for temperature monitoring and control, and PTC Thermistors for overcurrent protection applications.
  • PTC Thermistors

PTC Thermistors are used for overcurrent protection and have 0.8 to 100.0 Ohms with voltages ranging from 15 to 400 VAC.

  • NTC Thermistors

NTC In-Rush Current Limiters protect circuitry from surges when equipment is energized. Resistance is available 0.7 to 120 Ohms. Current ratings are available to 40 amps.

Capacitors Components:
We offer a complete line of High Voltage and safety recognized ceramic disk capacitors
  • THE TEMPERATURE COMPENSATING (CLASS I) CAPACITORS

are suited for resonant circuit applications, where high Q and predictable stability of capacitance characteristics are required. They have negligible dependence of capacitance and Q upon voltage, frequency, and time. These capacitors have temperature coefficients ranging from P100 to N750 and utilize lower dielectric constant ceramics (K<150).

  • THE EXTENDED RANGE TEMPERATURE COMPENSATING (CLASS I) CAPACITORS

have a more negative temperature coefficient that may range from N1500 to N5600. Dielectric constants may range from 40 to 900, but values of 150 to 160 are more typical. They have very slight dependence of capacitance and Q upon voltage, frequency, and time.

  • THE SEMI STABLE (CLASS II) CAPACITORS

utilize high dielectric constant ferroelectric formulations (K>500) based upon barium titanate. They exhibit markedly non-linear temperature characteristics, significant dependence on voltage and frequency, and predictable logarithmic decay of capacitance with time. Dielectric constants are available in the range of 500 to 3000, and are characterized by changes in capacitance by +_15% or less with changes in temperature over the rated temperature range. These capacitors are suited for by-pass, coupling, and filtering applications where Q and stability of capacitance characteristics are not of major importance. They exhibit predictable changes with time, voltage, and frequency.

  • THE FREQUENCY/TEMPERATURE STABLE CLASS II) CAPACITORS (TYPE FSP)

are stable in both frequency and temperature response characteristics. This group is characterized by capacitance values which vary: (1) by +_10% or less with changes in temperature over a range of +10°C to +85°C, and (2) by less than 10% over the frequency range of 1 KHz to 100 MHz. Their EIA temperature characteristic is Z5P. These capacitors are suited for wide-band audio or R.F. coupling and by-pass applications where frequency stability is important.

  • THE GENERAL PURPOSE HIGH-K CERAMIC CAPACITORS (CLASS III)

are identical to class II capacitors except the capacitance can vary by more than 15% with changes in temperature over the rated temperature range. Their dielectric constants are usually, but not necessarily, greater than 3500 and are available in Z5U and X5U temperature characteristic codes. These capacitors find application in by-pass, coupling, and other uses where dielectric losses, high insulation resistance, and capacitance stability are not of major concern.

  • SAFETY RECOGNIZED CERAMIC DISK CAPACITORS ARE AVAILABLE IN TYPES UW AND HX.

Type UW are UL recognized for Across-The-Line, Antenna-Coupling, and Line-By-Pass applications to 250 VAC. These capacitors are also CSA certified for Across-The-Line, Line-Antenna, and Line-To-Chassis use at 125 VAC. VDE approval has also been obtained for radio interference suppression use to 400 VAC. Type HX has the same approvals and capabilities as type UW, but in a smaller size. Use for suppression of radio interference is rated to 500 VAC.
