One of the biggest challenges our firm faces this year is the onslaught of
third-party Web site auctioneers that provide the forum for all buyers and
sellers to get together in. It seems that what these sites are actually offering
is a medium on which manufacturers can literally by pass their conventional
sales channels and provide directly to the end-users. This new e-commerce
methodology is more than just buyer finds seller, but an actual blue print for
what the future of B2B transactions would be like.
To cut costs even further for their clients, there are sites that have turned
around and made pressure sales tactics into pressure buy tactics by introducing
timed auctions with price ceilings, minimal incremental decreases, overtime
sessions, and many other strategies all aimed at lowering the price such that
the middleman is definitely squeezed out.
However, the good news for distributors and other value-added resellers
remains stocking, kitting, and multiple line services that the direct
manufacturers can't or won't provide. Our company not only delivers these values
but through unique and often quality-oriented Asian manufacturers, offers
cost-cutting opportunities with some innovative new products. Add to that
engineering design, applications support, and quality control to complete a
service so comprehensive it's hard to pass up on. Providing international hubs
for convenience in global coverage is also a must.
Bottom line: traditional sales channels will remain viable—despite
e-commerce threats—if the value and services offered are uniquely tailored to
customer needs.
