Can India Surpass the US in Electronics by 2040?

Published: 2.26.2024

A recent report by PwC India has projected that India could surpass the United States to become the world's second-largest economy in electronics by 2040.

This bold vision is underpinned by India's rapidly growing economy, which has outpaced the US in recent years. With a young and vast population, India boasts a large and readily available workforce, a crucial advantage in the labor-intensive manufacturing sector.

Government initiatives such as "Make in India" and "Production Linked Incentive (PLI)" schemes are acting as catalysts for growth. These initiatives incentivize local production, attract foreign investments, and create much-needed jobs in the sector.

India has already made significant strides in mobile phone production, attracting several global giants to set up manufacturing units in the country. This expertise could be leveraged to expand into other sectors like consumer electronics, further solidifying India's position in the industry.

However, India faces significant challenges on its path to electronics dominance. Upgrading infrastructure, including reliable power supply and efficient logistics networks, is essential for smooth operations and competitiveness in the global market. Established giants like China and South Korea have a significant head start in terms of technology, infrastructure, and economies of scale. To overcome this, India needs to find ways to differentiate itself, innovate continuously, and compete effectively in the global market.

The journey for India to reach the second spot in the electronics industry is indeed long and arduous. Yet, the potential rewards are significant, contributing to economic growth, job creation, and technological advancement. By addressing the challenges through strategic planning, skill development, and a commitment to innovation, India can pave the way for a bright future in the world of electronics.
