Solar arrays, battery energy storage systems, and other energy installations do more than generate or store electricity. Power also needs to be isolated, converted, protected, and distributed safely throughout the system.
Different parts of an installation have different electrical requirements. The DC side of a solar array, for example, requires different protection and switching equipment than an inverter output, transformer, or medium-voltage connection.
Eaton offers several product families that can support these functions. Some are specifically documented for photovoltaic applications, while others are general electrical components that can support solar, battery storage, industrial power, microgrids, and other energy infrastructure when correctly specified.
PV Protection and Isolation

One of the clearest Eaton products identified in the research is the N4-4-1250-S15-DC switch-disconnector.
Eaton documents this four-pole device for photovoltaic applications, with a 1250 A current rating and operation up to 1500 VDC. Its purpose is simple: it provides a way to disconnect and isolate high-current DC circuits.
Isolation is important in PV systems because equipment may need to be disconnected during maintenance, inspection, troubleshooting, or other electrical work.
The related NZM4-4-XKV2P DC link kit supports Eaton N4 photovoltaic and DC switch-disconnector configurations.
These two products have a direct and documented PV connection. That distinction is important. Not every industrial disconnect or circuit breaker should automatically be treated as suitable for a solar DC application.
The key consideration is to select switching equipment based on the actual voltage, current, circuit arrangement, and application requirements of the system.
Protecting Inverters and Power Conversion Equipment
Solar and battery systems rely heavily on power electronics.
A solar inverter converts DC electricity from the PV array into AC power. A battery energy storage system also uses power-conversion equipment to control how electricity moves between the battery, facility, and grid.
These systems contain sensitive power semiconductors that need protection against excessive current.
Relevant products identified include the 170M6116, 170M4246, 170M3765, 170M3715, 170M4411, and 170M6512.
The 170M family still has a useful role in an energy article because it supports the power-conversion equipment that solar and battery systems depend on.
These fuses can help protect high-value semiconductor devices inside converters and other power-electronic equipment making them relevant when maintaining components for inverter systems, BESS conversion equipment, industrial converters, and DC power architectures.
Circuit Protection and Power Distribution
Once electricity has been converted, it must still be distributed safely through the rest of the installation.
Circuit breakers help protect electrical circuits from abnormal current conditions and provide a way to disconnect sections of a power system when required.
The Eaton Power Defense PDG3 family, including the PDG33P0225TFAN, is a molded-case circuit breaker platform used for power-distribution applications.
These breakers are not specifically PV products. However, they can support the AC or general distribution side of energy installations when their electrical ratings match the design requirements.
Eaton's Series C FD and HFD breakers, including products such as FD3200, FDC3200, and HFD3150, provide another option for general industrial circuit protection and distribution.
For lower-voltage DC circuits, the FAZ-C10/2-NA-DC miniature circuit breaker provides dedicated DC protection. Its role is more appropriate for lower-voltage auxiliary or control circuits than for high-voltage PV strings.
This difference is important. An energy system can contain several voltage levels and circuit types, and the correct breaker depends on where it is being installed.
Supporting Energy Infrastructure
Large solar plants and battery-storage facilities also need transformers, medium-voltage connections, cable accessories, and surge protection.
This is where several Eaton Cooper Power products from the research become relevant.
The DCEA635M30 M.O.V.E. DirectConnect elbow surge arrester is a 35 kV-class medium-voltage surge-protection device. It can support medium-voltage distribution systems by helping protect connected equipment against transient overvoltage.
Eaton's 35 kV deadbreak cable-accessory family, including products from the DB635, BT635, DJ635, DIP635, DPC635, ISB635, and STUD635 families, supports connections between medium-voltage cables and electrical equipment.
These are not PV-specific products. They are supporting infrastructure components that can be relevant in larger solar plants, BESS installations, microgrids, and other power-distribution systems that use medium-voltage equipment.
Transformer protection is another part of the system.
The 4038361C05CB Bay-O-Net fuse link and 15NCLPT-1E-A Class E fuse provide transformer-protection functions. Their relevance comes from their role in electrical distribution rather than from being designed specifically for solar.
The same principle applies to broader applications such as EV charging infrastructure and industrial energy systems. Circuit breakers, transformer protection, DC control protection, surge protection, and medium-voltage connections may all be required, but the correct device must always be selected for the actual system design.

Selecting the Right Component for Each Part of the System
Solar and energy-storage systems require different protection devices at different stages.
A 1500 VDC photovoltaic disconnect performs a very different function from a semiconductor fuse inside a converter, a molded-case circuit breaker in a distribution panel, or a surge arrester on a medium-voltage network.
For engineers, this means selecting components based on the actual electrical design rather than assuming that one type of protection device will work everywhere.
For procurement teams, it also means maintaining access to the correct part numbers when equipment requires maintenance, replacement, or repair.
