Intel’s Strategic Restructuring: Altera Stake Sale and Industry Speculations

Published: 4.28.2025

Intel Corporation has announced the sale of 51% stake in its Altera unit to private equity firm Silver Lake for $4.46 billion. Taking a major step in Intel’s ongoing strategy to divest non-core assets and reinforce its commitment to advanced chip manufacturing.

Altera, which Intel acquired in 2015, specializes in programmable semiconductor solutions—specifically Field-Programmable Gate Arrays). These chips are uniquely valuable because they can be configured after manufacturing to serve specific needs in industries ranging from telecommunications to aerospace and military applications.

Beyond the Altera deal, industry speculations have surfaced regarding potential interest from major players like Broadcom and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) in parts of Intel’s business.

Since 2024, Intel has been working to separate Altera from Intel’s core business and turn it to a more independent entity with its own leadership and possibly its own public listing. The goal is to unlock Altera’s potential, attract outside investment, and allow it to grow more freely while Intel retains a significant minority stake

Altera will now operate with increased independence under the leadership of new CEO Raghib Hussain, formerly of Marvell.

Beyond the Altera deal, industry speculations have surfaced regarding potential interest from major players like Broadcom and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) in parts of Intel’s business.

Reports suggest Broadcom is evaluating Intel’s chip design and marketing divisions, while TSMC is considering aspects of Intel’s manufacturing operations.

However, both companies have not confirmed any formal negotiations, and Broadcom’s CEO Hock Tan has publicly dismissed acquisition speculations, emphasizing the company’s focus on AI and VMware.

These moves signal Intel’s proactive approach to restructuring and adapting to market demands. As the semiconductor sector continues to evolve, such strategic decisions will play a role in shaping the competitive dynamics of the industry.
